The BFI’s definition of ‘specialised film’ relates to those films that do not sit easily within a mainstream and highly commercial genre, e.g. foreign language, British independent, archival, moving-image art.

Tell us how your activity will develop audiences within cultural film. Please include information and data on how your activity meets one or more of the Fund's key focus areas. These are: 1) Engaging with Children and Young People, 2) Accessing a wider choice of film, 3) Tackling social, economic and geographic barriers and 4) Engaging with screen heritage. Section 4: Project Motivation*

Tell us why your project is important. Is it offering audiences something different and culturally valuable (British, independent, heritage, broader screen)? Is it engaging local groups who are underrepresented in cinema audiences? Are you targeting activity at audiences from rural locations, from working class backgrounds or projects engaging with Deaf and Disabled people, LGBTQIA+ people, Black, South Asian, South East and East Asian people and others of the Global Majority? (Up to approx. 300 words)

Additional Support

We may be able to offer additional advice and support for projects with strong inclusion aims that specifically address: Economic barriers and/or engagement of working-class audiences, Access for Deaf and Disabled audiences, Black and Global Majority audience inclusion, or Engaging children, families and young audiences. Proposals that focus on one or more of these areas may be shared with specialist freelancers, who may be in touch to discuss what, if any, support might be of use.
