This Way Up: Exhibition Innovation 2014

Film Hubs North, North West Central and Scotland are delighted to announce working together over the next three years to produce This Way Up: Exhibition Innovation, the first-ever annual event focusing on film exhibition.

The 2014 edition will take place at Tyneside Cinema on 2-3 December, and features industry speakers and a programme of events designed to offer the nationwide exhibition sector a new platform for ideas, collaborations, networking and discussion. This unique event will offer exhibitors a national dialogue on where we are and where we are going.

Four key industry figures have been asked to respond to our provocations:

  • 'The Death of Cinema, the Rise of the Cinematic'
Emma Keith, National Theatre Live, talks about the fact that cinematic forms and narratives are everywhere: from games and television to theatre and the arts.
  • 'The Price of Wasabi Peas'
Ian Francis, Flatpack Festival, asks ‘Can contemporary exhibition be both luxury, and democratic?’
  • 'How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Tweetalong'
Gabi Jenks, Abandon Normal Devices, looks at where the online experience sits within the exhibition sector, and how it can be exploited.
  • 'Anyone can be a Programmer'
Michael Pierce, Cinema Nation / Scalarama, explores the contemporary dialectic between the programmer and the audience as tastemaker, and who is really in control of what we exhibit.

There will also be a Pitch ‘n’ Mix event in which the shortlisted projects for This Way Up’s Exhibition Innovation Fund (worth £50,000) will be pitched to a panel of industry experts and delegates.

And you’ll not want to miss the Sheffield Doc/Fest and Crossover Labs present the Interactive at This Way Up Party - an evening of interactive exploration, where you can play with virtual reality on Oculus Rift headsets and enjoy interactive games and projection.

Delegate passes cost £50 and are available now. Bursaries to support travel and accommodation costs are available to members of the BFI Film Audience Network. For info on bursaries from Film Hub Scotland please contact carolyn@filmhubscotland.com.
