Can anyone be a programmer? What can we learn from other art forms? How can exhibitors harness the power of digital and is it ok to tweet in the cinema? These questions and more were enthusiastically debated by over 140 delegates at the first This Way Up: Exhibition Innovation conference held at the Tyneside Cinema in Newcastle last week.

Delegates and speakers from a wide range of organisations gathered to discuss the pertinent issues facing the exhibition sector, and to have some fun! This Storify summary of their Twitter chat brilliantly illustrates the level of engagement with the event. You can also read an Evaluation Report of the conference carried out by Cinema Nation.

£50,000 was up for grabs through the Exhibition Innovation Fund and delegates were asked to vote for their favourite projects following the live Pitch n Mix event. The two successful projects – animation season Move It and Test Dept DS30, a sound and image collage marking the 30th anniversary of the miners’ strike – will tour across the north of England and Scotland in 2015.

With 94% of delegates agreeing that “an annual conference is important to strengthen the sector” it seems there’s much appetite for next year’s This Way Up which will take place at HOME in Manchester. We, and our colleagues at Film Hubs North and North West Central, hope to see you there!
